Waldenburg in Schlesien was a coal-mining town, and its notgeld issues reflect the practical desperation of small municipalities forced to produce their own fractional currency during the chronic small-change shortages of 1917–1921. The Magistrat turned to a local printer — Ferdinand Domel's Erben, an established Waldenburg firm — rather than one of the larger specialist notgeld printers, which was common for first-wave utility issues before the collector-oriented "series" notgeld boom inflated production values.

Waldenburg became the Polish city of Wałbrzych after the postwar border adjustments of 1945, when the region's German population was expelled under the Potsdam Agreement.
