Ilsenburg, a small town at the northern foot of the Harz Mountains, issued this note as part of Germany's Kleingeldersatz system — the emergency small-change substitution that proliferated after the First World War stripped copper and nickel from circulation. Municipal bodies, businesses, and transport companies across Germany printed hundreds of millions of these Notgeld pieces between 1918 and 1922 simply to keep commerce moving at the retail level.
