Langeln is a small village in Holstein, and like hundreds of similarly obscure German municipalities, it issued Notgeld during the inflationary spiral of the early 1920s when small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation. The Gemeinde — a commune-level authority, about as local as German administration gets — contracted Konrad Hanf of Hamburg for the printing, a firm that handled a significant volume of regional Notgeld commissions during this period.

The designer credit to Erna Marg. Brieger is the only genuinely unusual element here. Named individual designers on Notgeld are relatively uncommon in the catalog record, and Brieger appears in only a handful of known issues.
