Aschersleben's 1917 Notgeld emission belongs to the first wave of municipal emergency currency issued after the Reichsbank restricted small-denomination coin circulation to conserve metal for the war effort. By mid-1917, Pfennig coinage had effectively vanished from daily trade across Germany, and hundreds of cities scrambled independently to fill the gap — Aschersleben among them.
