Kahla is a small porcelain-manufacturing town on the Saale river in Thuringia, and like hundreds of German municipalities it issued Notgeld during the acute coin shortage that followed the First World War. These small-denomination emergency notes were a local administrative response to a national problem — the hoarding and melting of metal coinage left everyday transactions impossible without paper substitutes at the pfennig level.

J. P. Himmer of Augsburg was a prolific Notgeld printer, handling commissions from municipalities across southern and central Germany during this period. The Augsburg address is the press location, not a detail of the issuing authority.
