Roßbach was a small village in Kreis Querfurt, in what is now Saxony-Anhalt, and like hundreds of comparable Gemeinden across Germany it resorted to locally authorized Notgeld during the acute small-change shortages of 1917–1921. The printer, Hofdruckerei Gerth & Oppenrieder of Gera, was a regional commercial house that supplied Notgeld to numerous Thuringian and Saxon municipalities during this period — not one of the major specialist printers, but competent and prolific in this niche.
The designer credit to C. Jacob is unusual enough to survive in the catalog record, which suggests the commission had some deliberate local character rather than being pulled from stock artwork.
