| Obverse description | Each of the three dissected coupons carries an orange-brown ground with a large underprint numeral '5' repeated across the field, over which bold black Fraktur text reads 'Gutschein über Hundert Mark' with the issuer inscription 'Stadt Düren' on the central panel. The left panel bears the place-and-date legend 'Düren, den 8. April 1921' alongside a clause referencing acceptance at all municipal cashiers, while the right panel carries the authorisation line 'Der Oberbürgermeister' with a facsimile manuscript signature. This is Notgeld — emergency municipal currency issued during Germany's catastrophic postwar inflation spiral, when the Reichsbank's coin supply had effectively collapsed and local authorities across the country were printing their own substitute money. Düren's solution here was a single 100 Mark sheet printed with perforation lines and issued to be torn into three 50 Pfennig pieces — an arrangement that assumes both civic trust and reasonably intact paper, neither of which was guaranteed in 1921.
Dissected examples that were actually separated from the parent sheet are the rule, not the exception. An intact uncut sheet bearing the Merkelbach catalogue numbers 39–41 is considerably harder to place.
