Grevesmühlen is a small market town in Mecklenburg, and like hundreds of German municipalities it resorted to locally issued Notgeld during the First World War when small-denomination coinage vanished from circulation almost overnight — hoarded by a public that trusted metal over paper. These town-issued pfennig notes were technically illegal under imperial law but were tolerated out of sheer necessity.
The DeNG reference places this in the first wave of municipal emergency issues. Richard Zscheked's involvement suggests a local commercial printer or designer rather than one of the major Notgeld production houses, which is consistent with the crude but earnest production quality typical of 1917–18 provincial issues from smaller Mecklenburg towns.
