Schwaan is a small town in Mecklenburg, and its 1922 notgeld issue belongs to the tail end of Germany's municipal emergency money phenomenon — by this point a thoroughly commercialized enterprise driven more by collector demand than genuine currency shortage. Many towns issued attractively printed small-denomination notes knowing they would never see serious circulation, effectively selling them to dealers and collectors at face value while pocketing the profit.
The DeNG reference suffix distinguishes between known variants, suggesting at least minor printing or serial differences within this single denomination.
