Neustadt in Mecklenburg is a small town in the former Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, and this 50 Pfennig note belongs to the vast wave of German municipal Notgeld issued between 1918 and 1923 as the Reichsbank struggled to keep small denomination coinage in circulation. Hundreds of German towns and district offices printed their own emergency money during this period — quality and staying power varied enormously.

The designer credit "Heinberg" appears on a number of Mecklenburg regional Notgeld issues, though little biographical detail has been firmly established about this artist.
