Neustettin — now Szczecinek in northwestern Poland — was one of hundreds of German municipalities that issued Notgeld during the hyperinflationary spiral of the early 1920s. The city's 50 Pfennig notes were printed by Adolf Forker in Leipzig, a firm that handled substantial volumes of small-denomination emergency currency for regional issuers across this period.
By 1922 the purchasing power of these notes was evaporating almost as fast as they could be printed and distributed. Most circulated briefly and heavily before the Rentenmark stabilization of late 1923 rendered the entire Pfennig-denomination Notgeld series worthless overnight.
