Güstrow's municipal savings bank issued this note during the acute small-change shortage of 1922, when coin metal had effectively vanished from everyday transactions and hundreds of German municipalities were forced to print their own Kleingeldersatz. The Hof- und Ratsbuchdruckerei — the court and council press, a local civic printer rather than a specialist banknote house — handled production entirely within Güstrow itself, which is reflected in the modest print quality typical of such in-house municipal jobs.
