Kalbsrieth is a village in the Kyffhäuserland district — small enough that its Notgeld issues are genuinely local in character rather than the cynically produced collector sets that flooded the German market in 1921. Many municipal Notgeld pieces from Thuringia that year were printed in bulk by regional printers for philatelic sale rather than genuine emergency use, and distinguishing between the two often comes down to surviving circulation wear.

The DeNG reference suffix 3/12 suggests this is the third of twelve known pieces in the series — a fairly ambitious run for a community of this size.
