Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse presents the municipal coat of arms of Wedel at centre — a red and white shield with a jagged white charge, flanked by a standing armoured knight — set against a stippled background. A bold red diagonal banner inscribed 'Anweisung auf die Stadt Wedel' crosses the upper field, with the denomination '50 Pfg.' repeated in large letterpress type at upper left and upper right. The denomination in Gothic script 'Fünfzig Pfennig' occupies the central band, below which appear the place and date 'Wedel / den 10. Juni 1921', a printed serial number, and a manuscript signature of the Bürgermeister at lower right.

Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse is dominated by a central full-length vignette of Charlemagne (Kaiser Karl der Große) in richly coloured armour, crown, and imperial regalia, holding a sword and orb within an ornate gilded Gothic arch frame. Two columns of calligraphic Gothic text in black and red fill the left and right margins, narrating the history of the Roland statue in Wedel's market square and its connection to Emperor Charlemagne's grant of market rights in 804. The denomination '50 Pfg.' appears in large red letterpress type at lower right, with the designer's monogram 'O/KURZ' at lower centre.

Opmerkingen

Wedel's 1921 Notgeld issue falls within the enormous wave of municipal emergency currency that flooded Germany during the postwar inflation years, when the Reichsbank simply could not keep low-denomination coinage in circulation fast enough to meet demand. Stadt Wedel, a small town on the Elbe west of Hamburg, produced its own series rather than rely on neighboring larger centers — common enough for towns of its size, but the designer credit "O. Kurz" appearing on the note is relatively uncommon; most comparable municipal issues went uncredited entirely.

Paper Notgeld of this period degrades quickly at the folds, and Wedel's issues are no exception.
