Richter, illustrates a collection of prehistoric ceramic finds from Hoym arranged on a table beneath a domed funerary urn, with smaller vessels, jugs, and tools displayed around it. A dotted semicircular border frames the main group. Hoym is a small town in the Harz foothills — a Gemeinde of no particular commercial weight — which makes the commissioning of a locally engraved Notgeld series from Louis Koch in Halberstadt somewhat more deliberate than the typical municipal rubber-stamp affair. Koch was a regional printer who handled a number of Harz-area emergency issues during the 1921 inflation surge, when the Reichsbank's coin shortage made small-denomination paper a practical necessity rather than a collector's game.
The engraver credit to W. Richter is uncommon enough to be worth noting; most small-town Notgeld at this level went to generic lithographic trade houses with no individual engraver named.
