Rudolstadt's 1921 notgeld issue was one of hundreds produced by small Thuringian municipalities during the postwar inflationary spiral, when fractional coinage had virtually disappeared from circulation. The city contracted Lorsch & Nachbar, a local firm, which was common practice — municipal authorities frequently used nearby printers to keep costs and logistics manageable, and the results varied considerably in quality.
