Dornburg an der Saale issued this note during the acute small-change shortage that swept Germany in 1921, when inflationary pressure had driven metal coins out of circulation almost entirely. The town is better known for its three Renaissance and Baroque palaces perched above the Saale — Goethe famously retreated there in 1828 following the death of Grand Duke Carl August — but the municipal treasury's more pressing concern that year was keeping everyday commerce moving.
Johannes Arndt in Jena produced Notgeld for dozens of Thuringian municipalities during this period, working under considerable pressure of volume. The proximity of the printer to the issuer was entirely practical.
