Brüel is a small town in Mecklenburg, and like hundreds of similar municipalities it resorted to printing its own emergency currency — Notgeld — during the severe coin shortage that followed the First World War. The 1921 date places this issue in the later phase of municipal Notgeld production, by which point many towns had shifted from purely functional scrip toward artistically ambitious designs intended to attract collector demand, a practice that generated real revenue for cash-strapped local administrations.
Richard Zscheked's involvement as designer is the one distinguishing detail here. The series reference DeNG 1/2#0191.1-3/3 indicates three variants, likely differentiated by color or minor design alteration rather than denomination change.
