Rehburg is a small spa town in Lower Saxony, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1921, its savings bank — the Sparkasse — was forced into issuing its own emergency money simply because the Reichsbank could not keep fractional coinage in circulation fast enough to meet demand. This is Notgeld in its most functional form: a stopgap printed locally by Appelhans of Braunschweig, a commercial press that handled a significant volume of such commissions across the region during this period.
The reference splits this into seven or eight varieties, likely reflecting serial number ranges or minor typographic differences across print runs — a level of granularity that matters chiefly to specialists working the DeNG catalog.
