Eilenburg's 1921 Notgeld issue belongs to the second wave of German municipal emergency currency — printed after the Reichsbank's post-WWI coin shortages had already dragged on for years and local authorities were left to fill the gap themselves. The designer credit to B. Matthäi is unusual; most Kleinnotgeld of this type was produced anonymously through regional print shops, and named designers are the exception rather than the rule in Saxony's smaller municipal issues.
The DeNG reference suffix variants .2-3/6 indicate documented paper or print differences within the same face value, a catalogued split that collectors frequently conflate when attributing single specimens.
