| Obverse description | The obverse carries the title inscription "Ersatzwertzeichen" in bold Gothic lettering across the top, flanked by two red and black heraldic eagle vignettes in the upper corners. The central vignette, printed in teal-blue and black, presents a large sailing vessel under full sail on open waters, rendered in an Expressionist woodcut style.
