Treffurt is a small town on the Werra river in Thuringia, and like hundreds of similarly sized German municipalities it resorted to locally-issued Kleingeldscheine in 1921 when post-war inflation had driven coins out of everyday use. The Magistrat — the town's civil administrative authority — commissioned Chr. Gerlach of nearby Mühlhausen to handle printing, a practical choice that kept costs and logistics manageable for an authority with no real monetary infrastructure of its own.

M.E. Beyrer's designer credit is an uncommon detail for a note at this level of the Notgeld hierarchy, where most small issuers simply accepted whatever stock layout their printer offered.
