A ribbon cartouche at the top of the vignette carries the caption 'DER SALON UM -1860-', while the denomination numeral '50' appears in large bold type at upper left and upper right. Harzgerode's 1921 Notgeld issue belongs to the great flood of municipal small-change notes that German towns were essentially forced to print as coin shortages — already acute during the war — persisted well into the early Weimar years. By 1921, the Reichsbank had still not restored a reliable supply of low-denomination coinage, leaving municipalities, merchants, and private firms to fill the gap themselves. Louis Koch in Halberstadt was one of dozens of regional printers who built a thriving side business serving this demand across the Harz region.
Collectors should note that Harzgerode issues from this period were produced in relatively small runs for a genuinely local circulation, which distinguishes them from the purely speculative "Serienscheine" towns were printing simultaneously for the collector market.
