The central scene illustrates an episode from Ettlingen's medieval history in which armed soldiers confront nuns at the gate of a convent, rendered in a boldly simplified graphic manner recalling early German woodblock illustration. Above the vignette a two-line rhyming couplet in Gothic script reads 'Da hatt' einmal, in alter Zeit, Ettlingen mit den Frauen Streit,' and a concluding couplet below reads 'die auf dem ehmals städtschen Plan ein reiches Kloster hatten stahn.' |
