Schmalkalden is better remembered for the 1531 Protestant League than for its municipal finance, but this Notgeld issue from the Kreisausschuss — the district committee — reflects the hyperinflationary pressures grinding through Germany two years before the crisis peaked. Kurt Jäckel handled the design locally, and Feodor Wilisch, a Schmalkalden printer, produced the run in-house rather than contracting out to one of the larger Notgeld printers then churning through orders. That local production chain is the whole story here — small district, small printer, small denomination filling a gap the Reichsbank couldn't.
