Rudolstadt's 1921 Notgeld issue belongs to the second wave of German municipal emergency currency — by mid-1921 the inflationary pressure on small-denomination Reichsmark coinage had made local paper substitutes a practical necessity rather than a novelty. Lorsch & Nachbar were a local firm, which was fairly typical for Thuringian towns of this size; the print runs were modest and distribution was genuinely local rather than aimed at the collector market that had already begun distorting issues from larger cities.
