Lehesten, a small quarry town in the Thuringian Slate Mountains, issued this note during the acute small-change shortage that gripped postwar Germany in 1921. Municipal and commercial Notgeld from this period was produced in enormous variety across thousands of German localities, but Lehesten's issues are tied directly to the town's identity as a slate-mining center — an industry that had defined the area since the sixteenth century.

Merzdorf & Frosch operated out of nearby Saalfeld, a regional printer that handled Notgeld commissions for multiple Thuringian municipalities during this period. The single signatory, Obenaus, was almost certainly a municipal treasurer or Bürgermeister signing on behalf of the town's administration.
