Frankenhausen's 1921 notgeld issue was one of hundreds of municipal emergency currency series produced across Thuringia as small-change shortages hit their peak in the early Weimar years. What distinguishes this particular piece is the Hamburg-based designer Walter Sigel, an unusual geographic disconnect for a commission of this local scale — most towns contracted with printers who handled design in-house.
Richters & Co. in Erfurt were prolific notgeld printers across the region, and the quality of their presswork was generally consistent, if unspectacular.
