Comments

Freyburg an der Unstrut is best known for the Rotkäppchen Sekt winery, established there in 1856, and the town's notgeld issues from the 1921 inflation period lean hard into that local identity. This 50 Pfennig piece is one of several denominations printed by Otto Richters & Co. in Erfurt as Germany's postwar coin shortage forced hundreds of small municipalities to commission their own emergency currency.

Richters was a competent regional printer, not one of the prestige houses, which shows in the production values of the Freyburg series relative to the more elaborately engraved notgeld coming out of Berlin or Leipzig at the same time.
