| 表面の説明 | Central vignette in dark brown letterpress shows two goldsmiths at a workbench in an interior workshop setting, with tools and materials spread before them and a window in the background; the scene is captioned at top with the inscription 'OBERSTEINER GOLDSCHMIEDE AM WERKBRETT'. Decorative guilloche panels frame the vignette at left and right, with ornamental squares at each corner. The lower portion carries the validity clause, the place and date of issue 'BIRKENFELD, den 1. FEBRUAR 1921', the authority line 'DER VORSITZENDE DES LANDESVORSTANDES', a serial number, and the denomination numeral '50' at lower right, with the printer's imprint 'SECHÉ KÖLN' below it. |

Birkenfeld was a Prussian exclave — geographically separated from the rest of Prussia and wedged into what is now Rhineland-Palatinate — which gave its regional administration an unusually independent posture during the notgeld period. This 50 Pfennig piece was issued by the Landesvorstand, the district's governing council, rather than by a municipality or private firm, which is the more common notgeld source. That institutional issuer is worth noting.
Seché in Cologne handled the printing. The 1921 date places this in the later wave of notgeld production, by which point German small-change shortages had been chronic for years.
