Obverse description The obverse is dominated by a central oval vignette bearing an engraved portrait of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, labelled 'Fr. Ludwig Jahn', set against a pink guilloche ground and framed by a decorative teal cartouche. Flanking the portrait are two columns of Gothic-script text with gymnastic aphorisms, while silhouette figures of gymnasts in athletic dress stand at the left and right margins against a pale blue ground, with the municipal cross emblem visible at the top centre between stylised foliage. The denomination '50 Pfg.' appears in red corner panels, the Notgeld title and issuing municipality 'Ritterhude' are inscribed in bold Gothic lettering across the upper register, and the date 'Ritterhude, den 15 Mai 1921' with serial number and a manuscript signature of the Gemeindevorsteher appear along the lower border.

Reverse description The reverse is divided into three vertical panels against a pale blue ground, with the central panel carrying a detailed letterpress vignette of the local Turnhalle (gymnasium), captioned 'Turnhalle' above and '"GEBRÜDER RIES STIFTUNG NEW YORK"' below, the building rendered in warm ochre tones with fine architectural detail. The left panel shows a silhouette figure of a gymnast holding aloft a flag bearing the municipal cross, beside a vaulting horse, with the motto 'Nur Übung stählt die Kraft' in Gothic script; the right panel similarly shows a standing gymnast at parallel bars with the motto 'Kraft ist was Leben schafft.' A bold lower register in black and pink carries the large Gothic inscription 'Notgeld fünfzig Pfennig' flanked by diamond-shaped panels bearing the numeral '50'.
