Altenwerder and Finkenwärder were small agricultural and fishing communities on islands in the Elbe south of Hamburg, and in 1921 both were still independent municipalities — Altenwerder wouldn't be incorporated into Hamburg until 1927, Finkenwärder not until 1938. Their joint issuance of notgeld through Dr. Linnemann & Co in Cologne was a practical arrangement; small communities frequently pooled administrative costs for emergency currency runs rather than commission separate series.
The Linnemann imprint appears across dozens of Rhineland-area notgeld contracts from this period, making attribution straightforward when the printer's credit survives clearly.
