Fehmarn, a Baltic island connected to the Schleswig-Holstein mainland, issued its own small-denomination emergency paper during the notgeld wave that followed Germany's postwar currency collapse. The Stadtverordnetenkollegium — the town council body of Burg, the island's principal town — was among thousands of municipal authorities that stepped in when coins vanished from circulation after 1918, hoarded by a public with no faith in the official monetary system.
J. C. König & Ebhardt of Hannover printed an enormous volume of notgeld for municipalities across northern Germany during this period, making attribution of the specific press run straightforward. Fehmarn was later connected to the mainland by the Fehmarnsund Bridge in 1963.
