Zons — the medieval Rhine toll town between Cologne and Düsseldorf, unusually well-preserved behind its 14th-century walls — issued this note during the acute small-change famine that gripped German municipalities in the early Weimar inflation years. Metal coins had effectively vanished from daily commerce by 1921, hoarded or melted, and thousands of towns printed their own Notgeld to fill the gap.
Dr. Linnemann & Co. in Cologne handled a substantial volume of Rhineland municipal Notgeld during this period. Lütckens' involvement suggests a considered design commission rather than a generic house layout.
