Comments

Schierke is a small resort village in the Harz mountains, and its notgeld issues from 1921 reflect the hyperinflationary pressures that drove thousands of German municipalities to print their own emergency fractional currency when the Reichsbank could no longer supply adequate small denominations. Louis Koch of Halberstadt was a regional commercial printer who handled notgeld contracts for multiple Harz-area communities during this period — not a specialist banknote printer, which shows in the relatively modest production standards typical of his municipal commissions.
