Genthin is a small town in the Magdeburg district of Saxony-Anhalt, and this note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept German municipalities between 1919 and 1922 — a period when chronic small-coin shortages forced local authorities to issue their own emergency fractional currency. The Magistrat had no printing infrastructure of its own; Alfred Hanf of Erfurt was a reliable regional supplier to dozens of similar municipal issuers across central Germany during this period.
Collector-grade Notgeld of this type was often printed in deliberate surplus and sold directly to dealers and collectors, muddying any attempt to reconstruct true circulation figures.
