Ditfurt is a village in the Harz foothills, and like thousands of German municipalities in 1921, it issued its own emergency paper — Notgeld — to compensate for the chronic shortage of small-denomination coinage that had been gnawing at everyday commerce since the war years. The Reichsbank simply could not keep low-value metal coins in circulation; they vanished into hoarding or melting the moment they appeared.
