Bad Salzig is a small spa town on the Rhine in the Hunsrück, and this 50 Pfennig note belongs to the massive wave of Kleingeldersatz — small-change substitute money — that German municipalities were forced to print between roughly 1916 and 1922 when coin metal was requisitioned and then postwar inflation swallowed whatever coinage remained. Thousands of towns issued their own Notgeld during this period, which means the series has enormous variety but also means individual municipal pieces are rarely scarce in absolute terms.
Bad Salzig's output was modest enough that it attracts collector interest disproportionate to its size.
