| Reverse description | The reverse presents a full-face scenic vignette of the Rhine riverfront at Bad Salzig, with a multi-storey Gothic-style tower building on the left bank, a sailing vessel on the water, and ruined castle remains atop the wooded hillside at right, all rendered in an expressive hand-drawn style with pink and green tonal underprint. The artist's signature 'Kruszwicki' appears in the lower right corner of the vignette. The denomination '50 PF.' is printed in bold letterpress at both lower corners flanking the town name 'BAD SALZIG a.RH.' centred along the bottom margin. |

Bad Salzig is a small spa town on the Rhine in the Hunsrück, and this 50 Pfennig note belongs to the massive wave of Kleingeldersatz — small-change substitute money — that German municipalities were forced to print between roughly 1916 and 1922 when coin metal was requisitioned and then postwar inflation swallowed whatever coinage remained. Thousands of towns issued their own Notgeld during this period, which means the series has enormous variety but also means individual municipal pieces are rarely scarce in absolute terms.
Bad Salzig's output was modest enough that it attracts collector interest disproportionate to its size.
