Castrop's 1921 Notgeld issue belongs to the peak wave of municipal emergency currency that flooded the Ruhr following the war — a period when coin shortages made small-denomination paper not just convenient but necessary. W. Crüwell was a well-established Dortmund commercial printer with a substantial Notgeld client list across Westphalia, which kept production costs manageable for smaller towns with limited budgets.
Walter Dogsette's involvement as designer is the one detail worth pausing on — his name appears across several Westphalian issues from this period, suggesting a working relationship with Crüwell rather than a direct municipal commission.
