Sept. 1921' and issuing authority 'DER MAGISTRAT' appear above two manuscript signatures. Eilenburg's 1921 Pfennig notgeld belongs to the second wave of German municipal emergency currency — issued not from genuine coin shortages, as in 1914–1918, but because small-denomination Reichsbank notes were being hoarded ahead of anticipated inflation. Hundreds of German towns issued similar scrip that year, many contracting the same regional printers, which is why design quality varies so dramatically across the series.
