Blomberg is a small town in the Lippe region — in 1921 it had fewer than 5,000 inhabitants — yet like hundreds of similarly sized German municipalities, its savings and loan office issued Notgeld when the Reichsbank could no longer keep small-denomination coinage in circulation. The inflationary pressure that made metal coins disappear from daily commerce forced local institutions of all sizes into the printing business, however briefly.

Gustav Heynke, Kanne und Kühne operated out of nearby Detmold, the Lippe state capital, and handled Notgeld commissions for several local issuers in the region during this period.
