Mülsen-Sankt Jakob is one of several small Saxon mining and textile communities that issued Notgeld during the inflationary chaos of the early 1920s, when coin shortages made small-denomination federal currency effectively unavailable at the street level. The Gemeinde — a rural parish-level authority with no pretension to financial sophistication — turned to a local commercial printer in nearby Glauchau rather than the specialist Notgeld houses in Leipzig or Berlin that produced the more decorative collector-targeted issues of the same period.
Rats-Druckerei R. Dulce was a civic and municipal printer by trade. These notes were made to spend, not collect.
