Magdeburg's 1921 Notgeld issue belongs to the second wave of German municipal emergency currency — not the inflationary catastrophe that followed, but the earlier coin shortage problem that had been grinding on since the war years. Cities were effectively printing small change because the Reichsbank couldn't produce it fast enough, and municipal authorities across Germany issued millions of these notes with varying degrees of artistic ambition.
The designer monogram "K.T." remains unresolved in the standard Notgeld literature. The reference spread across DeNG 1/2#0857.1-3/4 indicates at least four distinct varieties within this Magdeburg 50 Pfennig grouping — worth examining side by side, as the differences between subvarieties are not always obvious.
