Kitzingen sits on the Main River in Lower Franconia, and the town's 1921 Notgeld issue was one of thousands printed by German municipalities during the coin shortage that followed the First World War. What makes this series worth noting is the local production: M. Horschig & Schubert was a Kitzingen printer issuing notes for its own town, an arrangement that kept costs down but also meant quality control varied considerably across the run.
Designer M. Heim's involvement is documented in the plate credits — a relatively rare instance of a local Notgeld series carrying an individual attribution rather than an anonymous house design.
