Schmalkalden's Notgeld issues of 1921 are among the more self-consciously local of the German emergency currency wave — the Kreis Herrschaft (county lordship) designation itself reflects a medieval administrative title that survived, somewhat improbably, into the Weimar period. Feodor Wilisch was a local Schmalkalden printer, not a specialist security firm, which is exactly what the municipality could afford during the inflation spiral that was already accelerating by mid-1921.
Kurt Jäckel's signature appears as issuing authority countersignature. No co-signatory is recorded for this denomination.
