Rudolstadt's 1921 Notgeld issue belongs to the second wave of German municipal emergency currency — printed not out of genuine coin shortage, as in 1914–1919, but largely in response to collector demand. By 1921, many German towns had recognized that philatelists and notaphilists across Europe were buying these small notes as souvenirs, and Lorsch & Nachbar, a local Rudolstadt printer, handled the production entirely in-house rather than contracting to the larger specialist houses in Leipzig or Berlin.

The DeNG reference suffix variants (1a through 3/10) indicate multiple print runs with minor typographic or color distinctions — the kind of detail that drives series completionists and inflates scarcity claims on individual pieces.
