Rudolstadt issued this Notgeld piece during the inflationary spiral of 1921, when German municipalities were routinely forced to print their own fractional currency to cover the catastrophic shortfall of official small change. Lorsch & Nachbar, the local Rudolstadt printer, handled the production — an entirely local operation from authorization to finished note, which was not always the case with Thuringian Notgeld of this period.
The 1146 series from Rudolstadt ran across multiple face values and design variants; the ".1a" suffix in the DeNG reference indicates this is among the earlier printings within that run.
