Butzbach's 1921 notgeld issue belongs to the inflationary surge that forced hundreds of German municipalities to print their own small-denomination emergency money when Reichsbank coin simply disappeared from circulation. Scharfes Druckereien in Wetzlar handled production for several Hessian towns during this period, working under considerable volume pressure as demand for municipal scrip outpaced any orderly print schedule.
The DeNG reference suffix variants (7/8) indicate distinct printing differences within the same face value — likely color or paper stock variations common to provincial runs where ink batches and paper supplies were inconsistent from one job to the next.
