Hessisch Oldendorf was among the thousands of German municipalities that issued emergency small-change notes — Kleingeldscheine — during the postwar coin shortage, when hoarding and metal scarcity had stripped pfennig denominations almost entirely from circulation. Rudolf Hillebrecht, who later became Hanover's influential city architect after World War II, designed these notes early in his career. Edler & Krische in Hanover were prolific printers of Notgeld for the region.
